Work-life balance tips: get your evenings back

Also available in:
Updated: 26 October 2026. Numbers come from open vacancies on Cloz.
Work-life balance means your working day has a clear end, and after it you still have time for family and rest. Three things help you get it back: set clear working hours, answer after-hours messages politely the next morning, and ask about the schedule before you accept a job. As of 26 October 2026, 1,524 of the 9,258 vacancies on Cloz are shift or part-time jobs, about one in six.
Below: how to tell your balance is off, how to set limits, ready replies for evening messages, and schedule questions to ask at the interview.

Signs your balance is off

Most people notice too late, because tiredness builds up slowly. Check yourself. If three or more of these sound familiar, it is time to take your time back.
You keep opening the work chat after work.
You work on weekends, or think about work all weekend.
You eat with your family or play with your children less often.
You wake up tired and never get enough sleep.
You put off meeting friends because you are "too busy".
Small things make you angry quickly.
You cannot remember your last holiday.
None of this means you are lazy or weak. It only means work has taken too big a part of your life.

Set working hours and stick to them

Balance starts with a clear limit. Not "I will try to leave early", but "I finish at 18:00".
  1. Write down your hours. Take them from your contract or agreement, for example 9:00 to 18:00.
  1. Plan the day. In the morning, write the 2–3 most important tasks and do them first.
  1. End the day the same way. Write tomorrow's plan, turn off the computer, clear the desk. This tells your brain that work is over.
  1. Tell your manager once. Explain until what time you are available and how to reach you in a real emergency.
  1. Keep a record of extra hours. If you often stay late, write down how long. Numbers make the talk with your manager easier.
If you have two jobs, put both schedules in one table and add travel time. Then you can see how much free time is really left in your week.

Messages after work: how to say no politely

Telegram and work chats stretch the working day late into the evening. You do not have to answer every message at once. First ask yourself: is this really urgent, or can it wait until morning?
Ready replies. Copy them and change them to fit you:
  • A question that can wait: "Good evening! I have seen your message. I will look at it tomorrow morning and reply by 10:00."
  • A new task in the evening: "Thank you, noted. My working day has ended, so I will do this first thing tomorrow. If it is very urgent, please call me."
  • On your day off: "Today is my day off. I will take care of this on Monday morning."
  • An evening meeting: "Thank you for the invitation, but I am busy this evening. Would tomorrow at 10:00 or 15:00 work for you?"
After work, turn off notifications for work chats. Keep only phone calls on for real emergencies.
And do not break your own limit. If you answer at midnight a few times, colleagues will start to expect it every time.

Shift and remote work: special tips

Shift work

In shift work the schedule can change every week, and night shifts disturb sleep. There are many such jobs on Cloz: as of 26 October, 1,435 vacancies are marked as shift work.
  • Get your schedule early and share it with your family. A shared calendar or a paper schedule on the wall helps.
  • After a night shift, sleep in a dark, quiet room.
  • Plan days off with your family in advance. Do not leave them for "whatever time is left".
  • Agree on shift swaps with colleagues early, not at the last minute.

Remote work

When you work from home, work and home life mix, and the end of the day disappears.
  • Make a separate place for work, even if it is one corner of a room.
  • Agree on working hours with your family, so they know when not to disturb you.
  • When work ends, close the laptop and put it out of sight.
  • Keep lunch and breaks, just like in an office.

Part-time work

Part-time work is one way to get time back. It suits students, parents of young children and pensioners. As of 26 October, Cloz has 107 part-time vacancies. But if you combine two part-time jobs, the day with travel can become longer than one full-time job. Count it first. For students: Part-time jobs for students in Tashkent.

Questions to ask before you take a job

Your balance is often decided on the day you accept an offer. Asking about the schedule at an interview is not rude. It shows you are a serious candidate. Write these questions down:
What time does the working day start and end?
How many days a week: 5/2, 6/1 or shifts?
If there are shifts, are there night shifts, and how early is the schedule known?
How often is there overtime, and how is it paid?
Do you expect answers to messages in the evening and on weekends?
Can I sometimes work from home?
When can I take a holiday, and how many days?
How long is the trip to work? Check this yourself on a map.
Ask for the answers in writing, in a message or in the contract. Then nobody can say later "we never agreed to that". More questions to prepare: Job interview questions.

Small habits that help

You do not need to change everything at once. Small steps every day help more.
  • Charge your phone outside the bedroom. In the morning you see your family first, not the work chat.
  • Eat lunch away from your desk. Even a 20-minute break gives you energy back.
  • Stand up and walk every 1–2 hours. This matters most if you work at a computer.
  • Keep one evening a week only for family. Leave your phone in another room.
  • Plan next week on Friday. Then your weekend is free of work thoughts.
  • Plan your holiday early. A holiday with a date on the calendar is moved less often.
  • Practise saying no. You do not have to accept every extra task.
If work still takes all your time after all this, it may be time to look for another job. Shift and call center work is one option with a clear schedule: Call center operator job.

FAQ

How do I keep a good work-life balance?

Set clear working hours and close work when they end. Answer evening messages in the morning. Keep at least one evening and one full day a week only for family and rest.

Do I have to reply to my boss after work?

If it is not in your contract or agreement, usually not. Reply briefly and politely: "Seen, I will answer tomorrow morning." For real emergencies, agree that they will call you.

How can I find family time with a shift schedule?

Get your schedule early and share it with your family. Plan days off ahead. After a night shift, sleep first and do home tasks later.

Is it rude to ask about the schedule in an interview?

No. Employers want to see that you understand the job. Ask simply: "What time does the working day end, and how often is there overtime?"

How do I rest if I have two jobs?

Put both schedules in one table and add travel time. Keep at least one full free day a week. If no free day is left, one better-paid job may be the better choice.

Next step: look through vacancies with a schedule that fits you, shift or part-time, and ask the questions above at the interview.
