What to Put on a Resume When You Have No Work Experience

notion image
No formal employment does not mean you have nothing to offer. Employers also look for evidence that you can learn, take responsibility and handle the tasks in the vacancy.
Academic projects, practical training, volunteering, freelance tasks, helping a family business and self-directed work can all support an application. Label each experience honestly and explain what you personally did.

What a no-experience resume should include

  • your name, location, active phone number and professional email;
  • a specific target job title;
  • a short professional profile;
  • education and relevant coursework;
  • academic, personal or volunteer projects;
  • practical training, internships, freelance tasks or informal responsibilities;
  • skills that match the vacancy;
  • relevant courses, languages and a portfolio link.
Put your strongest evidence first. If your degree is directly relevant, lead with education. If you have strong projects, move “Projects and practical experience” higher.

Choose one target role

A resume for “any job” is difficult to make specific. Select a role and identify its main tasks, repeated skills and required tools.
A customer-support vacancy may emphasize communication and accurate data entry. Highlight situations where you answered questions, maintained lists or used spreadsheets. A social media assistant role may instead prioritize writing, content planning and the tools named in that vacancy.
Use the role, not your status, as the heading: replace “Student” with “Junior Accounting Assistant,” and “No experience” with “Customer Support Operator.” Prepare separate resumes for substantially different roles.

Write a focused professional profile

Answer three questions: who are you, which relevant skills can you prove, and where do you want to apply them?
Economics student with practical experience organising and checking data in Excel. Prepared reports and presented findings in academic projects. Seeking an accounting assistant role where accuracy with documents and spreadsheets is important.
Avoid relying on “I have no experience, but I learn quickly.” A tool you learned for a project, a report you completed or questions you handled at an event provide stronger evidence.

What can replace work experience?

Call the section “Projects and practical experience.”

Academic projects

Describe your contribution, not only the topic.
Example: sales analysis for a small shop
  • cleaned and categorised the source data in Excel;
  • prepared a table showing the main indicators;
  • turned the findings into a presentation and explained them to the group.

Training, volunteering and informal work

A short or unpaid placement is useful when described precisely. Replace “helped the department” with: “Sorted documents by topic, checked spreadsheet entries and flagged discrepancies for the responsible team member.”
Registering event guests, coordinating a student club, managing a family shop’s Telegram page, tutoring or recording orders can also show relevant skills. Use honest labels such as “volunteering,” “personal project” or “informal support,” not an invented formal position.

Describe action, method and outcome

Use this pattern:
What you did + the tool or method used + the output or result.
Replace “Worked with social media” with “Created a content plan, wrote post copy and prepared Canva visuals for an academic project.”
Skill
Possible evidence
Excel or Google Sheets
A table, formula, filter or report you created
Customer communication
Questions handled during an event, volunteering or an informal sale
Writing
A post, announcement, article or academic assignment
Organisation
A list, deadline or event process you managed
Do not copy every keyword from the vacancy. Include skills you can explain or demonstrate. Use a number only when it is true and verifiable; otherwise name the completed document, task or solved problem.

Education, courses and portfolio

Alongside your institution, subject and study period, include relevant coursework or a project.
[Institution], Marketing — [study period]
Relevant coursework: market analysis, consumer behaviour, digital marketing.
Academic project: audience analysis and a content plan for a local service.
For a course, add its name, provider, completion date and final assignment. Describe language ability honestly. A portfolio may contain writing, spreadsheets, presentations, content plans or analysis. Remove confidential information and test the link as a visitor.

Ready-to-use structure

[Full name] — [location] · [phone] · [email] · [portfolio]
Target role: [specific job title]
Professional profile: [current direction] + [relevant skill and evidence] + [tasks in which you can contribute].
Education: [institution], [field], [period] + [relevant project].
Projects and practical experience:
  • [your specific action];
  • [tool or method used];
  • [output or result].
Skills: [relevant software, tools and languages].
Courses: [only relevant additional training].

Common mistakes

  • leading with an apology for having no experience;
  • listing generic qualities without examples;
  • inventing a job, task or result;
  • taking credit for the whole team’s work;
  • adding every certificate regardless of relevance;
  • sending one resume to very different roles;
  • leaving an inaccessible portfolio link.
If you have no project yet, create a small sample based on a vacancy task: a content plan, organised spreadsheet, customer-support answers or a working prototype. Label it as self-directed practice, not client work.
Before applying, check that the target role is immediately clear, every important skill has evidence, every claim can be explained in an interview, and all contact details and links work. Unless another format is requested, PDF is a practical way to preserve the layout.
